Traffic Alert: Bicycle Detection Systems Installation

Carrboro Town News Posted on September 02, 2025

CARRBORO, NC -- Installation of bicycle detection systems at four signalized intersections (E. Main Street at Roberson Street, W. Main Street at North Greensboro Street, Weaver Street at N. Greensboro Street, and NC Highway 54 at West Poplar Avenue) will take place in September and October.

During work there may be brief traffic delays at these intersections as a contractor installs inductive loops in the road surface.

The loops are designed to detect bicycles at the intersections, triggering the traffic signal controller, and reducing delays and improving safety for cyclists.

How They Work

  • Detection: A bicycle enters the designated detection zone at the intersection.
  • Activation: The system sends a signal to the traffic signal controller, which recognizes the presence of a bicycle.
  • Actuation: This input then activates the bicycle-specific signal phase, giving a green light to waiting cyclists.

Benefits of Bicycle Detection Systems

  • Improved Safety: Enhances cyclist safety by ensuring they get a green light and are not left waiting at red lights.
  • Reduced Delay: Decreases the amount of time cyclists spend waiting for a green signal.
  • Enhanced Infrastructure: Completes the bicycle network by providing functional infrastructure that supports cycling.
