Vermicomposting: Composting Made Easy Indoors
Vermicomposting is an excellent option for people with limited outdoor space or those living in apartments or condominiums. Instead of relying on a traditional compost pile, this method uses earthworms, most commonly red wigglers, to break down organic waste.
As the worms work, they create a nutrient-rich compost made up of worm castings, leftover bedding, and any remaining feedstock from the worm bin. The result is a high-quality soil amendment perfect for houseplants, container gardens, and outdoor beds.

Make Your Own Worm Bin
You can make your own Vermicomposting kit with the following list of supplies and tools or purchase a kit from a retailer:
- One 14 – 20 gallon plastic storage tub with a lid
- A drill and drill bit (any size close to ½ inch)
- LOTS of shredded newspaper (way more than you think!)
- A bucket of water
- ½ - 1 pound (or more) of Red Wigglers (Eisenia Fetida is the scientific name).
